International debate on global reach problems

On the Aula Magna of our University, before the almost 200 high-school students from 20 countries of Europe that have participated in the latest edition of “The Change World Model United Nations”, the Catalan minister of Education, Meritxell Ruiz, appealed to the youth compromise with the UN values. These values are summed up in the triad “democracy, freedom and human values”.

The minister participated in the opening ceremony of this edition of the CWMUN, an international student debate that has had place for the first time ever in Barcelona, promoted by Saint Peter's School Barcelona and the Assoziazione DIplomatic.

During her intervention, the minister assured that initiatives like the CWMUN suppose a great opportunity for young people to take conscience of the world problems and take responsibility trying to solve them. This change “will depend on your action and compromise”, she affirmed. Along these lines, she mentioned one of the subjects treated on this CWMUN edition: the refugee crisis, a global problem that requires a global solution”.

In addition to Meritxell Ruiz, in this inauguration intervened our rector, Carlos Pérez del Valle, the general director of Saint Peter’s School, Josep Maria Ginjaume, and the general secretary of the CWMUN, Alessandro Dimaiuta. Also, in representation of the students, Carmen Garrido (Colegio Luis Vives, Mallorca), Alejandra Granja (La Salle, Santiago de Compostela), Lia Mikhelashvili (Guivy Zaldastanishvili American Academy In Tbilisi, Georgia), Elena Riera (Institut Vilatzara) and David Elharrar (St. Peter’s School) took the floor, as well as the director of the general assembly of CWMUN Barcelona, Ainhoa Hernández, a senior student of Saint Peter’s School.

CWMUN’s proposal consists on promoting the dialogue ability and to articulate solutions among young people, taking as a model the functioning of the UN. Participants act as if they were delegates of different countries member of the United Nations. In this case, in the “General Assembly” was treated the topic of humanitarian help to the refugee crisis. Later on, security commissions were created to treat specific topics such as the Syrian conflict, the situation in the Center-African Republic, the turmoil in Yemen, the genocide of Rwanda, or the Myanmar.
