Frequently Asked Questions
Studies
  • Q.: Next year, I would like to go to a foreign country to study. How do I look for my destination?
A.: In the website of our University, within International Agreements, you will find a roster of the universities with which we have a learning agreement. Choose your degree and look for the official websites of the universities that may be of your interest. Analyse their study plans and check which subjects you could get recognised at the UAO CEU. The next step is presenting to your Study Manager a proposal of credit recognition (Learning Agreement).
  • Important: to present yourself to the extraordinary call, you have to check the available destinations in the roster of universities.
  • Q.: Do I have to speak the language of the country of destination?
  • Q.: I am studying a double degree. Can I carry out a mobility stay?
A.: Sí, siempre y cuando tengas autorización de tu Director/a de Estudios.
  • Q.: I still have to pass some subjects from previous years. In spite of this, can I still apply for a place?
A.: Sí, siempre que ya hayas superado un mínimo de 60 créditos y que tengas aprobadas todas las asignaturas del 1er año de grado.
  • Q.: How and when can I present my application to study in a foreign country?
  • Q.: Which grants can I receive during my study stay?
A.: Depending on the country of destination, you can apply for the following scholarships:
          - Erasmus+ Scholarship: for stays within the Erasmus programme (in Europe).
          - MOBINT scholarship: for stays in Europe, Latin America, the USA, and Canada. Managed by the AGAUR.
  • Q.: If I apply for the call and get elected for a stay in Europe, will I receive an Erasmus scholarship?
A.: During the call, places are given, not scholarships. The number of scholarships depends of the European Commission and is published at the end of the academic year.
  • Q.: Which criteria are followed when giving the places?
A.: The selection criteria is available in the document Bases of the Call (it can be found in Mobility Students UAO > Calls and procedures > Study call > Requirements > Documentation).
  • Q.: When is resolved the extraordinary call?
  • A.: The results will be published via Campus Net at the end of March of 2017.
Erasmus+ Internship
  • Q.: The scholarship Erasmus+ Internship: what is it?
A.: The scholarship Erasmus+ Internship allows you to carry out an internship from 2 to 12 months in a country within the European Union or in the countries outside the European Union participatin in the Erasmus+ programme (Republic of Macedonia, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Turkey).
  • Q.: Who can apply for the scholarship Erasmus+ Internship?
A.: Students and newly graduates from the UAO CEU. Check the requirements in the website of the University > Mobility UAO students > Calls and procedures > Call internship stay > Requirements
  • Q.: To apply for this scholarship, do I have to find where to carry out the internship?
A.: Yes, to apply for this scholarship, in the first place you have to fins an entity in which you are going to carry out your internship. You have to present the document Training Agreement to the International Relations Service, signed by your company, with the rest of the documents that are demanded on the call.
  • Q.: How do I look for the internship?
A.: There are several websites where you can look for your internship. We reccommend the following:
         - Erasmusintern
         - Empleo (only in the UK)
         - You can also present yourself as a free candidate in some company of your interest.
  • Q.: When is the limit period for this application?
A.: These scholarships are given in a strict order of arrival, until there are no more places left. In any case, the deadline to finish the internship is the 20th of September of 2017.

Living in Barcelona

Barcelona is located in the northeast of Spain. It is the capital of Catalonia and the main economic region of Spain. The city has a population of over 1.5 million people, whilst the number of inhabitants in Catalonia as a whole exceeds 7 million people.

Due to its location on the shores of the Mediterranean, Barcelona enjoys a warm, welcoming climate, with pleasant temperatures all year round.

Nowadays, Barcelona is a modern, cosmopolitan and very dynamic city. It is a pleasant city to live in, tailored to the needs of the people.

Abat Oliba CEU University is located in the upper area of Barcelona,  a district that provides quiet spaces where students can go in order to focus on intensive knowledge activities. Here we can find a city model with several other universities, as well as other facilities and green areas close to the Collserola mountains.

The language used at the UAO CEU is mainly Spanish, unlike other Catalan universities. This is because we are part of the largest educational group in Spain, the CEU, with 24 schools and many universities. You will also be able to find some bilingual degrees with classes in English.

Practical information about Barcelona:

In addition, we offer many suggestions so you can enjoy all the leisure options and cultural activities in Barcelona:

How to arrive to the University?

Bus

The buses 60, 196 and 123 ("bus del barri") have a stop at the gates of our University. There are other bus lines with near-by stops: 22, 30, 58, 64, 66, 17, 73 and 75.

ferrocarrils de la generalitat de catalunya

The closest “Ferrocarrils Catalans” train station to the university is the L7 (Avinguda Tibidabo) (From this point, there is a 10 minute walk to the University).

Health insurance

Every student staying at Abat Oliba CEU University must have a health insurance policy that covers the whole stay in our University. A certifying document (copy) of this insurance must be sent with your application.

If you are a student from the European Economic Area (countries of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), and you have the right to Public Healthcare in your country of origin, you must process the European Health Insurance Card (which substitutes the E-111 or E-128 form). This form is issued by the Public Healthcare authorities of your country and gives the right to have healthcare assistance in Spain.

If you are a student coming from a country that does not belong to the European Economic Area, you must find out if there is a medical agreement between the Public Healthcare of your country and the Spanish Healthcare (as is the case in some countries from Latin America). If there is such an agreement, you will have to address the public healthcare authorities from your country to issue the pertinent document and, therefore, having the right of medical assistance in Spain.

If you are a student that does not belong to any of the aforementioned scenarios, you will have to take out a private medical insurance policy that covers your stay in Catalonia. We advise you to ask for a document to your insurance company, in Spanish, Catalan, English or French, if possible, where this medical coverage is stated.

Healthcare system

Barcelona has one of the best healthcare systems both at an European and a global level. The public healthcare system is universal and free at the point of use, and can be accessed by means of the following:

  • Community Health Centres (CAP). These centres offer free medical assistance for any illness or vaccine. You are assigned a CAP depending on your place of residence. You will also have access to the available pharmacies. There are some pharmacies in Barcelona open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and most pharmacies have opening times from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Public hospitals. As a foreign exchange student, you only have to walk into a hospital in a case of a real emergency. For common illnesses you must attend your CAP.
Life cost

To give you an idea about what expenses you can expect, we provide the following estimation:

  • Accommodation: €300 - €500 in a shared flat, or from €700 to €1,400 in student housing.
  • Groceries: €200.
  • Transportation: €50.
  • Other expenses: €200
Banks and credit cards

Barcelona has a wide network of bank offices (which are usually open weekday mornings and Thursday afternoons) and ATMs available 24h. Keep in mind that in order to open a bank account, you must first obtain your NIE card.

Wifi

UAO CEU grants free Wi-Fi access to all their international students. You can obtain your username and password at Academic Management.

Moreover, Barcelona has an open access Wi-Fi network, with more than 700 hotspots in the whole city. It is not necessary to register to access “Barcelona WiFi”. By connecting from these hotspots, you will have direct access to maps of the city, transport guides and useful information from the Barcelona City Council.

Calendar and holidays

Some festivities are celebrated throughout the year. Some are celebrated in all of Spain, others only in Catalonia, and some only in the municipality. All international students receive an academic calendar in which these festivities are marked, before their arrival to the city.

Spanish timetables and habits usually differ from other cultures', too. For instance:

  • Shops and businesses open from Monday to Saturday afternoon, and also there are many bakeries and convenience stores open on Sundays around the city.
  • Usually, stores open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Malls and the stores in the city centre are open during lunchtime and often close around 8:30 and 9:30 p.m.
  • Locals usually have the following eating times:
    • Breakfast: between 9 and 11 a.m.
    • Lunch: from 2 to 4 p.m. (main meal of the day)
    • Dinner: from 9 to 10:30 p.m.
  • Restaurants and hotels offer wider opening times. In addition, you can try the typical tapas in any bar of the city at any time during the day.
  • Working hours: generally, a standard work day starts between 8 and 9 a.m., with a lunch break around 2 to 4 p.m. and ends around 6 and 7:30 p.m., depending on how long the lunch break is.

Non-EU students on internships: If you are going to carry out internships that are part of your study plan and under the frame of a collaboration agreement between the UAO CEU and your university, you will not need any work permit.

The Universitat Abat Oliba CEU assigns to mobility the mission of promoting among its faculty the knowledge exchange, the incorporation of innovative referents and, generally speaking, the opening of the university community to the external world.

In addition, the university exchange promotes, without a doubt, the institutional encouraging action of language learning, which benefits either the educational project -since it allows it to reassess and reconsider its contents and methods- and the educative cooperation promotion, a goal that is a core part of the mission of this University. Parting from these premises, the University promotes the mobility of its faculty by means of the specific exchange programmes and the reception of external professors.

The International Relations Service annually publishes the Mobility Call. In this information appears the roster of universities and possible centres. Those professors interested in mobility must send to the International Relations Service the required application form.

REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIPATE

Faculty can opt for several places, depending on their linguistic knowledge and preferences.

In order to do so, they must fulfill the following criteria:

  • Belonging to the collective of the Teaching and Researching Body, or the Researching Body in training, or the Post-doc Research Body of the Universitat Abat Oliba CEU during the academic year 2016/2017.
  • Having the nationality, the permanent or temporary residence, or status of refugee or stateless of one of the states participating in the Erasmus+ programme.
  • Applying for a stay in some university with which the UAO CEU has signed an Erasmus+ agreement.

2016-2017 PDI Call

Open

Deadline for applications: until the 15th of October of 2016.

Those candidates who might want to carry out a stay before the 15th of October must state so in their application form.
