Frequently Asked Questions
Studies
  • Q.: Next year, I would like to go to a foreign country to study. How do I look for my destination?
A.: In the website of our University, within International Agreements, you will find a roster of the universities with which we have a learning agreement. Choose your degree and look for the official websites of the universities that may be of your interest. Analyse their study plans and check which subjects you could get recognised at the UAO CEU. The next step is presenting to your Study Manager a proposal of credit recognition (Learning Agreement).
  • Important: to present yourself to the extraordinary call, you have to check the available destinations in the roster of universities.
  • Q.: Do I have to speak the language of the country of destination?
  • Q.: I am studying a double degree. Can I carry out a mobility stay?
A.: Sí, siempre y cuando tengas autorización de tu Director/a de Estudios.
  • Q.: I still have to pass some subjects from previous years. In spite of this, can I still apply for a place?
A.: Sí, siempre que ya hayas superado un mínimo de 60 créditos y que tengas aprobadas todas las asignaturas del 1er año de grado.
  • Q.: How and when can I present my application to study in a foreign country?

          - Santander scholarship: for stays in Portugal and Latin America.
          - MOBINT scholarship: for stays in Europe, Latin America, the USA, and Canada. Managed by the AGAUR.
  • Q.: If I apply for the call and get elected for a stay in Europe, will I receive an Erasmus scholarship?
A.: During the call, places are given, not scholarships. The number of scholarships depends of the European Commission and is published at the end of the academic year.
  • Q.: Which criteria are followed when giving the places?
A.: The selection criteria is available in the document Bases of the Call (it can be found in Mobility Students UAO > Calls and procedures > Study call > Requirements > Documentation).
  • Q.: When is resolved the extraordinary call?
  • A.: The results will be published via Campus Net at the end of March of 2017.

Living in Barcelona

Barcelona is located in the northeast of Spain. It is the capital of Catalonia and the main economic area of Spain. The city has a population of over 1.5 million people, whilst the number of inhabitants in Catalonia as a whole exceeds 7 million people.

Due to its location on the Mediterranean seashores, Barcelona enjoys a warm and welcoming climate, with pleasant temperatures all year round.

Nowadays, Barcelona is a modern, cosmopolitan and very dynamic city. It is a pleasant city to live in, tailored to the needs of the people.

The Abat Oliba CEU University is located in the upper area of Barcelona,  a district that provides quiet spaces where students can go in order to focus on intensive knowledge activities. Here we can find a city model which lives together with other universities, as well as with other facilities and green areas close to the Serra de Collserola.

The language used at the UAO CEU is mainly Spanish, unlike other Catalan universities. This is because we are part of the largest educative group at a national level, the CEU, with 24 schools and many universities. You will also be able to find some bilingual degrees with classes in English.

Practical information about Barcelona:

In addition, we offer many suggestions so you can enjoy all the leisure offer and culture of Barcelona:

How to arrive to the University?

Bus

The buses 60, 196 and 123 ("bus del barri") have a stop at the gates of our University. There are other bus lines with near-by stops: 22, 30, 58, 64, 66, 17, 73 and 75.

ferrocarrils de la generalitat de catalunya

The closest “Ferrocarrils Catalans” train station to the university is the L7 (Avinguda Tibidabo) (From this point, there is a 10 minute walk to the University).

Health insurance

Every student carrying out a temporary stay at Abat Oliba CEU University must have a health insurance that covers the whole stay in our University. A certifying document (copy) of this insurance must be sent with your application.

If you are a student from the European Economic Area (countries of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), and you have the right to Public Healthcare in your country of origin, you must process the European Health Insurance Card (which substitutes the E-111 or E-128 form). This form is issued by the Public Healthcare authorities of your country and gives the right to have healthcare assistance in Spain.

If you are a student coming from a country that does not belong to the European Economic Area, you must find out if there is a medical agreement between the Public Healthcare of your country and the Spanish Healthcare (as is the case in some countries from Latin America). If there is such an agreement, you will have to address the public healthcare authorities from your country to issue the pertinent document and, therefore, having the right of medical assistance in Spain.

If you are a student that does not belong to any of the aforementioned scenarios, you will have to hire a private medical insurance that covers your stay in Catalonia. We advise you to ask for a document to your insurance company, in Spanish, Catalan, English or French, if possible, where this medical coverage is stated.

Healthcare system

Barcelona has one of the best healthcare systems both at an European and a global level. The public healthcare system is of universal and free access, and can be accessed by means of the following:

  • The Community Health Centres (CAP). These centres offer free medical assistance for any illness or vaccine. You have assigned a particular CAP depending on your place of residence. You will also have access to the available pharmacies. There are some pharmacies in Barcelona opened 24/365, and most pharmacies have opening times from 9.00 h to 22.00 h.
  • Public hospitals. As a foreigner student, you only have to walk to a hospital in a case of a real emergency. For common illnesses you must attend the CAP.
Life cost

To guide you in which monthly expenses you may have, we provide the following estimation:

  • Accommodation: €300 - €500 in a shared flat, or from €700 to €1,400 in student housing.
  • Groceries: €200.
  • Transportation: €50.
  • Other expenses: €200
Banks and credit cards

Barcelona has a wide network of bank offices (which are usually opened on mornings and Thursday's afternoons) and ATMs available 24h. Keep in mind that in order to open a bank account you must previously obtain your NIE card.

Wifi

The UAO CEU grants free wifi access to all their international students. You can obtain your username and password at Academic Management.

Moreover, Barcelona has an open access wifi network, with more than 700 connecting points in the whole city. It is not necessary to previously register to access “Barcelona WiFi”. Connecting from these points, you will have direct access to maps of the city, transport guides and useful information from the Barcelona City Council.

Calendar and holidays

Some festivities are celebrated throughout the year. Some are celebrated in all Spain, others only in Catalonia, and some even on a municipal level. All international students receive the academic calendar in which these festivities are marked, before their arrival to the city.

Spanish times and habits usually differ from other culture's, too. For instance:

  • Shops and businesses open from Monday to Saturday afternoon, and also there are many bakeries and convenience stores opened on Sundays around the city.
  • Usually, stores open from 10:00 h to 14:00 h and from 16:00 h to 20:00 h. Malls and the stores at the city's centre are opened during lunchtime and often close around 20:30 and 21:30 h.
  • Locals usually have the following eating times:
    • Breakfast: between 9:00 h and 11:00 h.
    • Lunch: from 14:00 h to 16:00 h (main meal of the day)
    • Dinner: from 21:00 h to 22:30 h.
  • Restaurants and hotels offer wider opening times. In addition, you can try the typical tapas in any bar of the city at any time during the day.
  • Working hours: generally, a standard work day starts at 8:00 h - 9:00 h, with a lunch break at around 14:00 h - 16:00 h and ends around 18:00 h and 19:30 h, depending on how much time is the lunch break.

Non-EU students on internships: If you are going to carry out internships that are part of your study plan and under the frame of a collaboration agreement between the UAO CEU and your university, you will not need any work permit.

PDI/PAS Mobility

PDI

The Universitat Abat Oliba CEU assigns to mobility the mission of promoting among its faculty the knowledge exchange, the incorporation of innovative referents and, generally speaking, the opening of the university community to the external world.

In addition, the university exchange promotes, without a doubt, the institutional encouraging action of language learning, which benefits either the educational project -since it allows it to reassess and reconsider its contents and methods- and the educative cooperation promotion, a goal that is a core part of the mission of this University. Parting from these premises, the University promotes the mobility of its faculty by means of the specific exchange programmes and the reception of external professors.

The International Relations Service annually publishes the Mobility Call. In this information appears the roster of universities and possible centres. Those professors interested in mobility must send to the International Relations Service the required application form.

REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIPATE

The Universitat Abat Oliba CEU assigns to mobility the mission of promoting among its administrative staff the knowledge exchange, the incorporation of innovative referents and, generally speaking, the opening of the university community to the external world.

In addition, the university exchange promotes, without a doubt, the institutional encouraging action of language learning, which benefits either the educational project -since it allows it to reassess and reconsider its contents and methods- and the educative cooperation promotion, a goal that is a core part of the mission of this University. Parting from these premises, the University promotes the mobility of its administrative staff by means of the specific exchange programmes.

The International Relations Service annually publishes the Mobility Call. In this information appears the roster of universities and possible centres. The administrative staff interested in mobility must send to the International Relations Service the required application form.

Mobility regulation

Presentation

The Universitat Abat Oliba CEU assigns to mobility the mission of promoting among its students the knowledge exchange, the incorporation of innovative referents and, generally speaking, the opening of the university community to the external world. In addition, the university exchange promotes, without a doubt, the institutional encouraging action of language learning, which benefits either the educational project -since it allows it to reassess and reconsider its contents and methods- and the educative cooperation promotion, a goal that is a core part of the mission of this University.

Parting from these premises, the University promotes the mobility of its students by means of the specific exchange programmes and the reception of external students. For these reasons, we publish on our website the institutional information, updated and bilingual, of the organisation, the functioning, regulations, etc.; and the information of all the degrees offered by our University, with a detailed description of the courses and their study programmes, as well as basic information about the city and the culture of the country, which may guide the students towards their election.

Responsible body

The management of the student's mobility organisation system belongs to the International Relations Service, assigned to the Vice rectorate of Research and International Relations, which carries it out with its International Programmes Service (SPI), a unit specially responsible for calling and managing every year the Programme Lifelong Learning and the Bilateral exchange agreements.

The IPO is the responsible for the compliance of the management proceedings regarding the mobility of Incoming Students and Outcoming Students.

Incoming Students

The reception of foreign students for mobility reasons is the product of an institutional relationship formalised in a bilateral agreement with the university or the higher education institution of the country of origin of the applying student.

Information

The IPO publishes in the University website all the required information for the incoming students before they travel, the required documentation and the information regarding their arrival.

Documentation

After regularising the agreement, the file of the receiving transcript record is opened. It is then completed with the following documents:

  • 1. Bilateral Agreement.
  • 2. Transcript Record prior to the mobility stay.
  • 3. Learning Agreement.
  • 4. Transcript Record after the mobility stay.
  • 5. An accrediting certificate of the effective stay of the arriving student (the original copy is filed in the university of origin).
  • 6. Stay report by the arriving student (the original is filed in the university of origin).
Reception

Once they arrive to out University, the students are individually interviewed with the International Programme Coordinator, so they can verify the status of the required documentation and bring assistance if needed.

Personal service

The Student Attention Service helps them find accommodation, as well as basic information about the city and the different public services. This service is developed during the whole stay and answers every question or problem the arriving student may have.

Tutorial attention

The Tutorial Attention Service, according to the responsible of the arriving students, assigns a mentor teacher for the student. This mentor has to check the student will be able to successfully keep up with the chosen subjects before the signature of the Learning Agreement and, in case of doubt, inform the student of the academic alternatives that may be offered. Finally, the mentor must endorse with his or her signature the enrolment proposal that the arriving student will be carrying out. This service is developed during the whole stay and answers every question or problem the arriving student may have.

Enrolment

The enrolment proposal supervised by the mentor must be presented at the Academic Management Service, which then proceeds to enrol the student. The Service gives then to the students their user names and passwords, so they can access the information systems and use the university equipment (laptop and personal electronic closet).

Welcome day

After the effective incorporation to our University, the International Programme Organisation holds a Welcome Session, whose call is programmed and each arriving student is personally notified via mail before their arrival. The content of this Session is articulated in different acts, that include the informative sessions about the academic regulation and functioning of the University, about Barcelona, about the Spanish and Catalan culture, about the cultural activities that will be performed during their stay in our University, about public safety and civility (performed by a member of the Local Police), etc. In addition, in this session is delivered the documentation and the pertinent academic material and, after the welcome appetiser, we proceed to show the historical building of our University to all new students, which finishes with the reception offered by the academic authorities.

Linguistic formation

The Language Service organises for all the arriving students a basic Catalan language and culture course, designed to acquire a minimum competence for their everyday life, and two courses of Spanish language and culture, either beginner's level or advanced level, necessary to ensure to keep track of the studies subjects. Moreover, the arriving students are offered a linguistic exchange programme with other local students of the university interested in learning their language.

Social activities

The IPO organises, throughout the year, cultural events for the arriving students, such as excursions and visits to monuments and interesting spots, as well as theme parties at the end of every semester, dedicated to spread the country's traditions and folklore. Also, the Sports Service spreads among the arriving students its activities and offers them the incorporation to many sports modalities during their stay at the University.

Record processing

The Academic Management Service processes the arriving student record at the end of their stay and sends to their university of origin the required documentation. In addition, it manages the dispatching of certifications corresponding to the arriving student's application.

Satisfaction evaluation

Once the stay has ended, the IPO carries out a survey among the arriving students about the satisfaction regarding the received education and services, from which performs the evaluation report and improvement proposal, which sends to the IPO responsible for its consideration.

Outgoing Students
Documentation

After regularising the agreement, the file of the receiving transcript record is opened. It is then completed with the following documents:

  • Student Application Form.
  • Bilateral Agreement.
  • Erasmus letter of the rights and responsibilities of the student.
  • Mobility grant agreement for study purposes signed by the student and the university.
  • Learning Agreement.
  • Stay certificate signed by the destination university.
  • Stay report written by the student.
  • Transcript Record with the passed credits before the mobility.
  • Transcript Record with the passed credits after the mobility.
  • Proof of Academic Recognition.
Participation application

The IPO annually publishes the Mobility Call by means of a general announcement in the intranet and their website. Also, they make an announcement on the notice board of the International Relations Service. In this information appears the roster of possible centres and universities, with the details of the degrees with agreement and the language in which they are taught.

Those interested on mobility must send the IPO the pertinent on-line application.

The applicants are summoned by the IPO for a personal interview with the International Programme Coordinator in order to define possibilities, adequate destinations for their profile and interest and required qualifications. This interview can be substituted by a questionnaire via email in case the students apply for a second mobility while being abroad on their first mobility stay.

Participation requirements

Students can opt out to more than one place, according to their linguistic knowledge and preferences. For this, they should fulfil the following requirements:

  • Having passed all the pertinent subjects for the first year of their degree.
  • Being enrolled on that academic year on any official degree or cycles, including the PhD. Those students that, for a justified reason, are not enrolled at the moment of the Mobility Calling, can apply for it but the place assignation is conditional to their enrolment.
  • Not having participated in more than two Mobility Programme calls during their degree studies. Different stays during the same year are considered a single participation.
  • Not having had an academic stay in the same university in which is applying a mobility place.
  • Accrediting the linguistic competence needed for keeping track of the academic subjects in the university of destination. In the specific case of the USA universities, it must be accredited a minimum mark of 550 points on the TOEFL exam (213 points according to the new marking system). Those students not having an accreditation can take the tests organised by the Language Service for the exchange places in English, French or German-speaking universities. If an applicant does not pass the chosen language test or does not take the test, h or she will only be able to opt places in Spanish, Portuguese or Italian-speaking universities. For places in Italian-speaking universities, the student will have to certify, before the 1st of July, having taken at least 60 hours of training in that language. The students who apply for a second mobility stay can keep the mark of the prior year or taking the language test in the upcoming call.
Place assignation

The IPO is responsible for the monitoring of the whole process and takes care of the problems, doubts or questions brought up by the destination university, which, usually, involves the following actions:

  • Students that have not taken part on any Mobility Programme have priority, independently from their ranking position, over those who have already participated or are currently participating (from any University).
  • Students that have taken part on a mobility stay by means of an Erasmus Agreement can only apply the second mobility stay through the Exchange Bilateral Agreements endorsed by the University.
